Ruby's Blog - Revisiting Initial Legerete - RELAXATION Part 1

Marelda and Ruby

Over the past couple of months I have been contemplating over and over the best way to begin teaching my young horse (Marelda). I put emphasis on teaching as this comes before the training

Over the past year, with Christine’s help, I have been working mostly on taming Marelda. This taming step is incredibly important as it allows your horse to feel comfortable around you and eventually trust that you will keep them safe.

This is proving to be a lengthy process with Marelda, with her initial reaction to anything new being a kick and bolt. Though this has been somewhat frustrating, it has taught me a lot about the importance of relaxation.

When we look at the Ecole de Legerete training scale we can see that Relaxation is part of the initial Legerete triangle, this is as relevant to in-hand and ground work with young horses as it is to more advanced and ridden training.

Without relaxation Marelda finds it incredibly difficult to focus and respond to what I am asking of her, let alone learn something new. Here, relaxation becomes the key to the whole teaching process. With this in mind I have been working on strategies to find relaxation as much as possible and slowly but surely we are making progress!
